Wellington proudly sits amongst the most beautiful capital cities in the world. Speak with a local and they’ll all tell you one thing – ‘You can’t beat Wellington on a good day!’ And as a Wellingtonian, I completely agree

Whether you’re trying to get in shape for summer, or just want a nice walk to get out of the house, we’ve come up with our pick of great walks. They’re all accessible with a buggy in tow, and are safe enough to bring a toddler along with you.  Here is our pick of Wellington buggy walks:

Round the Bays – Wellington

You can enter this annual race in February, or you can take a leisurely walk around the bays in your own time...

Bay in Wellington

This is one of the most scenic and beautiful walks in Wellington. There is ample time to start from either end of the peninsula, with both ends having stops along the way. You’d be surprised how blue the harbour can get, and for the adventurous, you can walk all the way from thechocolate fish cafe to scorch-o-rama.

The Wellington Botanical gardens

One of the most iconic public spaces in Wellington, the Botanical Gardens has a number of different walkways for you to enjoy.

Wellington Botanic Gardens

The paths are smooth, buggy (and dog) friendly and there are many sights to enjoy, such as:

  • The Rose gardens
  • A sound shell
  • Begonia house
  • The duck pond
  • A children's play area
  • And many, well-tended flower beds
  • A greatcafe/restaurant

Trentham Memorial Park

Situated in Upper Hutt (45 mins out of the Wellington central), Trentham Memorial Park was purchased by the Upper Hutt City Council from the Barton family in the 1950’s. It’s now a 48 hectare haven for sports, recreation and family activity and best of all – it’s buggy friendly! There’s a walking path that stretches alongside the Hutt River, which acts as a gateway to the Rimutaka cycle track. The Trentham Memorial Park is a great Wellington buggy walk!

Rimutaka Rail Trail

The Rimutaka Rail Trail is a new track that has been opened up to the public.

There are many walks of varying lengths and skill levels that can whet the appetite of the most avid buggy walkers. We recommend taking the shorter cross creek to car park walk first to get a feel for the walk.

Mount Victoria lookout

One of the most spectacular lookouts in the Wellington Region, Mount Vic has many different walking tracks the lead to the top.

Mount Victoria Lookout

The first and easiest way up is from the road. There’s plenty of foot space and big trees to keep you occupied and shaded on your ascent. If you’re the nature loving type, take one of the many trails while enjoying the sound of native birds - there are many resting places available to stop and enjoy the landscape around you. The view at the top is spectacular and is best enjoyed on a still day.

Wellington buggy walks – they’re a real treat!

There are so many great walks and hidden gems in the coolest little capital in the world that allows you to take your buggy, so if you’re still struggling to find something suitable, ask a local!
